Why Asking “R U OK?” Matters

Sometimes a simple conversation can mean more than we realise. R U OK?Day is Thursday 10 September 2026, a reminder to check in with the people around us and make space for a genuine conversation, not just on one day, but whenever someone is on our mind.

You do not need to have all the answers. Asking, listening and giving someone your time can be a meaningful place to start.

A conversation can start anywhere

Life gets busy, and it can be easy to assume the people around us are doing fine. R U OK? encourages Australians to stay connected and have meaningful conversations with friends, family, colleagues and others who may be going through a difficult time.

You do not have to wait for the perfect moment or find the perfect words. It might be as simple as asking, “How are you going?” or “What’s been happening?” If you have noticed someone seems a little different, you might gently mention that and ask how they are.

Sometimes a gesture can make starting the conversation feel more natural too. Invite someone for a coffee, suggest a walk, sit with them over lunch, or send a message to let them know you have been thinking about them. The important part is making time to listen without judgement.

What if they do want to talk?

R U OK? recommends four simple steps: ask R U OK?, listen, encourage action and check in. You do not need to solve what someone is going through. Give them time to speak, listen to what they say and ask how you can support them.

And remember to check in again. A message or conversation a few days later can show that your concern was genuine and that you are still there.

Our door is always open for a conversation

At Peake, our day-to-day work is property, but it is also very much about people. We meet people through all sorts of moments and changes in life, and our team is always up for a chat and a conversation. Sometimes it might be about a home or a move. Sometimes it might simply be a chance to connect.

This R U OK?Day, we are sharing a simple reminder: if someone is on your mind, reach out. Ask the question, make the time and listen.
